The Rayners 8th May 2004
Saturday saw The Rayners Hotel playing host to one of San Francisco’s
most exciting new bands, The Stolen Bibles. As a late addition to the tour the
gig suffered from a lack of publicity but the Bibles’ irreverent and original
blend of Soul, Blues, Funk, Rock and Gospel, not to mention a hefty dose of
enthusiasm, quickly won over the small crowd.
Guitarist, singer and songwriter, Tony Mattioli, led the way with some incendiary guitar work and soulful vocals as the band ripped through a bunch of original songs from their two independently released CDs.
The low turnout did little to deter the band who followed Mattioli’s lead and put in an impressive performance and also looked to be having a great time. Keyboard player Dan Eisenberg, better known for his work with Ryan Adams and Shelby Lynn, and drummer Dave Tweedie perfectly complimented Mattioli’s eclectic style and certainly left the audience wanting more.
British singer Micky Kemp, whose unique version of Americana songwriting soon got toes tapping, sets a high standard and he proved a tough act to follow. Kemp’s clever lyrics, catchy tunes and formidable stage presence have gained him a solid following on both sides of the Atlantic.
Saturday was another impressive performance as he hits the road to promote
new CD “Sweet Rock & Roll”, recorded last year with a group
of respected Texan musicians. Kemp undoubtedly has the talent to carry a show
and it would be nice to see him back as a headliner at this great music venue,
which is making a real effort to put on top-notch acts.
