ROADHOUSE DARK RIDE
Review by Nick Dalton of Country Music International (CMI)

Dark, twisted sounds from sharp London band who have honed their cutting edge roots style around the pubs and clubs for some time now. Country's a huge part of the mix but you'll also find rip-roaring blues and straight-down-the-road rock creating a sound that exists in its own musical borderland. Led by guitarist / singer / writer Gary Boner, the album's a mass of understated slide and lead guitar, much coming from the giant, bearded figure of Noel Brown, a veteran of stints with everyone from Jerry Lee Lewis to Graham Parker. Add smokey sax from Andy Thompson, who's played with Dire Straits, Stephen Stills and even good old Elton, and twin raunchy girl vocals from Anne Campbell and Mandy G and you've got the picture. Apart from when you add ex-Family guitarist Charlie Whitney with delicate mandolin, notably on Backstreets, sung by Road House founder Robert Roberts, who also plays evocative harmonica on several tracks. It¹s country in the same way that the Band were country. A heavy, intoxicating blend full of desperation, great riffs and monster tunes. |
